Understanding Harmful Network Activities

Ever wanted to understand activities going on inside your firewall? With a couple of freeware and/or shareware programs it is possible to identify potentially hazardous activities on your network.
In a Windows environment, you can use Palisade Systems' PacketPup to monitor general activities and popular applications running on your network. PacketPup tracks, in real- time, the percentage of network bandwidth being used by general activities or applications, such as P2P, HTTP, FTP, and audio streaming programs. The program displays the network activity in real-time using bar and line graphs.
Once you identify any disconcerting activities or communications taking place on your network, you can use Ethereal, a free network packet capture tool, to filter specific IPs and capture packets of interest. Activities like P2P file-sharing or instant messaging, can create security risks or bandwidth issues on a network.
PacketPup and Ethereal along with an application filter or quality of service (QOS) appliance can be used to monitor and filter any negative network activities. With PacketHound, an application filter appliance, you can either use one of its built- in rules or create a customized rule using the packet capture from Ethereal to block virtually any network action or communication.
